TELUS internet slower than your plan? An honest diagnosis

Slow internet sends people shopping for faster plans they don't need. Before you spend an extra $30 a month, spend ten minutes finding out WHERE the speed is actually going. The answer is usually free.

Test the truth first

Plug a laptop directly into the box with a cable, close everything else, and run a speed test twice. This number is your ground truth: what TELUS actually delivers. If it matches your plan, your provider is innocent — and a plan upgrade will change nothing.

Test the WiFi honestly

Now unplug and test again beside the box, then in your problem rooms. Big drop-off with distance = WiFi coverage, not speed. This is the most common 'slow internet' in existence — and the fix is placement or pods, not money.

Evening slowdowns explained

Fine at 10 am, crawling at 8 pm? That's neighbourhood congestion — everyone streams at once. A wired connection sidesteps most of it; no plan size fully escapes it. Knowing this saves you from a pointless upgrade.

The free upgrade: placement

Central, high, open. Not the basement mechanical room, not behind the TV, not inside a cabinet. In Calgary's long NW bungalows, moving the box five metres can double real-world speed — and it costs nothing.

When a faster plan genuinely helps

Multiple heavy users at once (4K streams, big downloads, video calls, all simultaneously) can genuinely exceed a modest plan — then the wired test shows it. We'll tell you honestly which side of that line you're on, even when the answer costs us the upsell.

Our honest-interest disclosure: we earn nothing from your plan size. A $89 diagnosis that says "you're fine, just move the box" is a win in our books — it's why people refer us.

Still stuck? We fix it in your home — same day.

Quick answers

Why is my internet slow but speed test is fine?
Speed tests measure a moment; your experience is hours. Test at the times you actually use it — and test wired vs WiFi separately, since WiFi losses are the usual culprit.
Will a WiFi 6 router make my internet faster?
Faster WiFi, yes — faster internet, only if your devices and plan support it. It's the third fix, not the first: placement, then pods, then hardware.
Is TELUS slowing down my internet at night?
Not deliberately — evenings bring neighbourhood-wide congestion, and cable-based networks feel it most. A wired connection and realistic expectations beat conspiracy theories.
